A music player with no suggestions

Paste a link. A YouTube or YouTube Music playlist, a YouTube Mix, or a playlist, album or single song from Spotify, Apple Music, JioSaavn, Gaana or Deezer. Press play. It runs from the first song to the last.

That is the whole interaction. There is no library to build first, no onboarding, no "what do you like?" — because the playlist you already made is a better answer to that question than anything a form could collect.

• No recommendations

  Nothing is picked for you and nothing is ranked by how long it might keep you here. The list that plays is the list you pasted.

• No feed to fall into

  There is no home page of thumbnails, no trending row, no "because you watched". One screen, and the song on it.

• No account needed

  Nothing to sign up for. Your saved playlists live on your own device; signing in is optional and all it does is carry them to your other phone or laptop.

• Nothing to pay, and no ads between songs

  Mehfil is free, shows no advertising of its own, and plays one song straight into the next with nothing squeezed in between.

Paste a link from YouTube or YouTube Music, or from Spotify, Apple Music, JioSaavn, Gaana or Deezer, and Mehfil plays that playlist for you, in order, all the way through. You do not need an account anywhere and you never sign in to any of them.

No ads between songs. Mehfil shows no advertising of its own and plays one song straight into the next. Most songs play from a plain audio file that carries no ads at all; only the few available solely as a video carry whatever that video carries.

• The words, as they are sung

  Each line lights up in time, and you can tap any line to jump to that moment. Some songs have no lyrics to show, and a few are untimed, so those appear as plain text.

• Made for a patchy signal

  Effects switch off and artwork gets lighter when the connection is weak, so the music keeps going. If a song does stop, it carries on from where you were rather than starting again.

• It stays where you left it

  Come back an hour later, or on another device once you have signed in, and it picks up at the second it stopped.

• It plays behind your lock screen

  The song, the artwork and the controls appear there, and your headphone buttons work. Phones are strict about this — the app is the version that never gives up.

It is free, and there is no paid version waiting behind it. There is no database: your library, your playback position and everything cached lives in your own browser, on your own device. Sign in and that list syncs between your devices — that is the only thing an account does.

The whole thing is open source under the MIT licence, so none of the above has to be taken on trust.
